How do walnuts dry buds

When the author went to the countryside, many fruit growers reported that the walnut stemming technique was not well mastered. Not that the survival rate was low, that is, the tree growth after growing grafted was not ideal. I do not know how.

According to our practical experience, the walnut rootstocks undergo a net dry treatment prior to sprouting. If budding grafts are to be replaced with higher grafts in order to improve the survival rate, several technical aspects must be mastered.

1. Suitable rootstock for grafting. Suitable for grafting on rootstocks with a trunk diameter of more than 12 cm and with relatively thick branches (more than 5 cm) and less.

2. Dried walnut rootstocks and pre-harvest shoots culture. Determine the dry height and number of new shoots depending on the trunk thickness and tree growth of the walnut rootstocks. The general stem height is 1.6 to 2.5 meters, 7 to 12 new shoots are reserved, the trunk is thicker and the tree vigor is stronger. The higher the dry height, the more pre-grafted. After the height of the stem was determined, before the spring walnut sprouts, they were cut from the height of the stem and all the branches on the trunk were removed from the base, leaving only one polished rod. When the walnut sprouts in spring, the buds start from 1 to 1.2 meters high and the buds are spaced 20 to 25 centimeters apart. The buds rise spirally and are arranged in a wrong position. Except for the buds, all other germs were erased. When the new shoots are pre-picked up to 30-40 cm, they will be picked up to promote bold growth. When sprouting, the top bud leaves 1-2 leaves and then picks up the heart, and the other buds outside the top bud are erased in time. When the diameter of the new shoot diameter exceeds 1.2 cm, it can be budded.

3. Prepare before answering. When the soil moisture is insufficient before the harvest, the rootstock should be watered 3 to 5 days before grafting.

4. Bud collection and storage. Select pest-free, vigorously growing new shoots (developed shoots or fruit tips) on the elite species scion nursery or superior nursery tree, cut from the base, and immediately leave the leaves on the shoot at 1.. 5-2 cm petiole Cut it out and immediately pack it with a prepared wet sack to prevent loss of water. It is best to use it now, otherwise it should be properly preserved. Stored in a cellar, kept on the ground with a 10 cm thick sawdust, splashed sawdust into the water, placed the base of the scion upright on the sawdust, covered the scion with a wet sack, and changed the water once a day. , store up to 3 days.

5. Budding time, method. The budding time is from late May to late June. Grafting should be selected on sunny and rainy days. When buds are picked, full buds are selected. Each bud is cut at a distance of 1.5 to 2 cm and 2 to 2.5 cm below the bud. The depth reaches to the xylem. Each side of the bud is cut longitudinally and the width is 1.2 to 1.5 cm. Lower bud tablets. Take vascular bundles when taking buds. At the base of the new shoot, 10 centimeters from top to bottom were cut across the knife, and the length was the same as or less than 0.2 cm. A knife was cut longitudinally on the outside, and then the buds were cut open on the side of the opening and the skin was picked up. The same wide skin was peeled off. The buds removed from the scion are quickly set to the opening of the new shoot. Then use a plastic strip from the bottom up to laminate the buds. After picking up, leave 3 to 4 leaf anvils on the sprouts.
