Fresh chrysanthemum processing method

After harvesting fresh chrysanthemums, it's crucial to process them as soon as possible. Leaving them unattended for too long can lead to spoilage. Begin by sorting the flowers and removing any debris like stones, soil, or plant residues. Rinse them thoroughly with clean water and spread them out in a well-ventilated area to dry. Avoid piling them up, as this can cause internal heat and lead to rotting. If immediate processing isn't possible, spread them thinly in a cool, dry, and ventilated space, but make sure not to leave them for more than a day, as prolonged storage may affect their quality. Next, place the dried chrysanthemums into bamboo baskets. The baskets should be approximately 30 to 40 cm in diameter and about 7 cm deep. When loading the basket, ensure the flowers are packed firmly but not overly compressed. Overfilling can result in uneven drying or damage. It’s recommended to use around three baskets per acre, each holding roughly 1,000 grams of fresh chrysanthemums. For steaming, use a pot that is about 80 cm in diameter, filled with around 3,000 grams of water. Once the water starts boiling, carefully place the chrysanthemum-filled baskets on the steamer. Three baskets can be steamed at once, and the lid should be closed tightly. Steam for 4 to 5 minutes, then remove the baskets while they're still hot. Maintain a steady and strong flame throughout the process, avoiding sudden changes that could affect the outcome. It’s important to change the water during steaming to keep it clean. Be careful not to add too much water, which could cause the flowers to boil, nor too little, which might result in under-steaming and raw flowers. Finally, after steaming, the chrysanthemums will take on a flat, cake-like shape. Remove them from the baskets and lay them out on bamboo screens. Allow them to air-dry for 6 to 7 days, turning them every 1 to 2 days to ensure even drying. If weather conditions are unfavorable, such as during rainy days, you can switch to using artificial drying methods to maintain quality. This step is essential to preserve the color, aroma, and overall quality of the final product.
