Before planting garlic, the seeds are typically categorized into varieties, whole bulbs, cloves, and planting trays.
Choosing garlic: Select large, firm bulbs with a shiny white skin, free from damage, frost injury, pests, or mold. The garlic should be uniform in size, with a diameter of at least 4 cm being ideal for better uniformity and higher yield. A firm texture is preferable—garlic that feels solid when pressed is healthy, while soft or shriveled garlic indicates dehydration and weak growth potential. Garlic that has been stored or handled improperly may show signs of heat damage, such as brown spots on the outer layers, yellowing inside, and more severe discoloration indicating greater damage.
Cutting garlic: Be careful to avoid damaging the cloves during the cutting process. Garlic cloves are lateral buds found on the shortened stem of the garlic bulb. Each clove consists of two layers of scales—the outer layer protects and dries to form a thin membrane, while the inner layer stores nutrients and develops into the fleshy part of the clove. At the top, there is a small bud with a germination opening. In late autumn, young shoots begin to grow upward, signaling the start of garlic sprouting. During this time, it's important to keep the garlic and its stems intact to prevent damage. When cutting, remove the roots carefully to avoid injuring the cloves.
