Summer Management of Shed Peach
After harvesting the greenhouse, it's time to uncover the peaches. Once the protective film is removed, continued management is essential to extend leaf lifespan, prevent premature leaf drop, enhance photosynthesis, and encourage flower bud differentiation. This sets the stage for a high yield in the following season.
First, summer pruning aims to control branch length and improve air circulation within the canopy. By removing excessive branches, upright growth can be redirected into horizontal, well-spaced structures. Dense branches should be thinned out, while strong vertical shoots can be trained to grow more laterally for better light exposure.
Second, pest and disease control is crucial after harvest. Apply 70% mancozeb at a dilution of 500–600 times or 50% carbendazim at 700 times. Between July and August, spray 2–3 applications of 200–240 times diluted Bordeaux mixture to protect against leaf and stem diseases, as well as pests like leaf caterpillars and moths.
Third, post-leaf fall care involves watering the trees thoroughly before winter frost sets in. During dormancy, focus on shaping the tree structure, developing strong fruiting branches, and expanding the canopy. Pruning should follow the principle of "more cuts, less shearing," keeping as many branches as possible. Prioritize slow release by training branches to grow outward, leaving only full buds on the main branch tips. For fruit-bearing trees, thin out excessive fruiting spurs and shorten medium to long fruiting branches. For trees that have been fruiting consecutively, consider renewal pruning to rejuvenate the tree and restore vitality.
Fourth, combine fertilization with soil cultivation in early autumn. After harvest, temperatures remain relatively warm with longer daylight hours, making this an ideal time for post-harvest feeding. Applying decomposed chicken manure at 10–20 kg per tree, along with 0.5 kg of NPK fertilizer, can boost photosynthesis, increase nutrient storage, and support flower bud development. Water the trees after applying the fertilizer. To further enhance leaf function, spray foliar micronutrients at a concentration of around 0.3%.
