Five health tips for sheep in summer

Summer in southern China is characterized by high temperatures and humidity, which creates ideal conditions for mosquitoes and flies to multiply. This environment increases the risk of viral and parasitic diseases among livestock, especially sheep. To ensure the health of your flock during this season, it's essential to implement effective disease prevention and pest control measures. Below are some practical steps you can take to protect your animals.

1. Ensure thorough disinfection of the sheep shed. The walls and floors should be treated with a 10-20% lime milk solution, 10% bleaching powder, 3% lactic acid, 5% ash, or 10% carbolic acid. For outdoor areas, use 3% bleach, 4% formalin, or 5% sodium hydroxide. At entrances, apply 2-4% sodium hydroxide or 10% kelp solution. Disinfect skin and mucous membranes using 70-75% alcohol, 2-5% iodine, or 0.01-0.05% neomycin solution. For wounds, clean with 1-3% gentian violet, 3% hydrogen peroxide, or 0.1-0.5% potassium permanganate. Manure should be composted by covering it with 10 cm of soil and allowing it to ferment for a month. Sewage must also be treated by adding bleaching powder or quicklime (2-5 grams per liter) before disposal.

2. Provide medicinal baths for the sheep. Construct a bath that is 0.6-0.8 meters wide, 0.3-0.5 meters deep, and 3-10 meters long. Install fences at both ends and a slight slope at the exit for drainage. Common solutions include 0.1-0.2% insecticides, 0.05% phoxim, 0.03% lindane, 0.2% cypermethrin, 0.04% pyrimidine, 0.05% chlorpyrifos, or an oil-based emulsion (75 ml petroleum, 27 g caustic soda, 250 ml water). Lime sulfur baths can also be used. Medicinal baths should be done on sunny days, with sheep fasting for 8 hours beforehand. Ensure they drink enough water before bathing, and keep the liquid temperature around 30°C. Avoid bathing sick, injured, or pregnant sheep. Each animal should be submerged for at least 3 minutes, with their head submerged 1-2 times. Afterward, let them drain and rest in the shade for 6 hours before feeding.

3. Perform deworming regularly. If spring deworming was delayed, treat for external parasites before summer grazing. Common anthelmintics include albendazole (15-20 mg/kg), levamisole (8 mg/kg), and exterin (0.2 ml/kg). Always test a small group first to ensure safety and effectiveness.

4. Carry out proper vaccinations. Vaccines available in China include anthrax spores (Type II), Brucella Type 2 attenuated vaccine, tetanus toxoid, tetanus antitoxin, sheep quadrivalent vaccine (protecting against enterotoxemia, pasteurellosis, etc.), lamb dysentery vaccine, goat pleuropneumonia vaccine, and others. Follow a scientifically sound vaccination schedule, and consult local veterinary professionals for guidance.

5. Use summer health supplements. A natural remedy includes mixing 25g each of pollen, forsythia, Coptis, astragalus, wolfberry, turmeric, and licorice. If the sheep are suffering from digestive issues, add 10g nitric acid, 25g rhubarb, and 30g two-ugly (a traditional herb). This blend helps boost immunity and support overall health during the hot season.
