After the use of agricultural machinery and maintenance matters
Some users only purchase new machines for seasonal use. After they are done using them, the machines are often left exposed to sunlight and rain. When they need to be used again, they often find that the machine won't start, and various engine components such as the cylinders, piston rings, valves, valve seats, and conduits are damaged or corroded. This situation can lead to significant losses and frustration. To prevent this from happening, it's essential to perform proper maintenance on machines that are stored for long periods after use. Here’s a detailed guide:
1. Clean the exterior of the machine thoroughly, including any attached farm tools or implements.
2. Store the machine in a dry and well-ventilated area to avoid moisture buildup.
3. Drain all the cooling water from the water pipes and tanks to prevent freezing or corrosion.
4. Start the engine for about 20 seconds to help evaporate any remaining moisture inside the engine.
5. Manually turn the crankshaft to position the machine at the beginning of the compression stroke. At this point, both the intake and exhaust valves will be closed, and the high-pressure pump roller will not be pressed by the camshaft. Keep the machine in this position and cover the intake and exhaust ports with tape or cloth to prevent insects and dust from entering.
6. Apply a thin layer of fresh engine oil to all parts of the machinery that are prone to rust.
7. Every two months, remove the covering from the intake and exhaust ports, start the engine for more than ten seconds (without adding coolant), then return it to its original storage position and re-cover the ports. This simple process helps keep the engine in good condition and prevents rusting entirely.
For machines like threshers, pumps, and crushers, clean the exterior and apply rust-resistant oil to vulnerable areas. Cover the inlet and outlet ports to prevent foreign objects from getting inside. In the case of pumps, make sure to drain all water from the pump housing before storage.
Proper maintenance ensures that your equipment remains in good working condition and is ready for use when needed. Taking these steps can save you time, money, and unnecessary stress in the long run.
