Non-pollution prevention and treatment of orchid diseases and pests

In modern times, orchid pests and diseases are mostly managed using chemical pesticides. However, excessive use of these chemicals can harm the orchids themselves. Long-term or frequent application of such pesticides can lead to pest resistance, making them ineffective over time. Additionally, spraying pesticides can pollute the environment and, in severe cases, even poison humans and animals. Fortunately, pollution-free methods for controlling orchid pests and diseases have been practiced since ancient times and are widely used today. These natural methods are effective, low-cost, easy to prepare, environmentally friendly, and free from harmful side effects, making them highly recommended for orchid lovers. Here are some traditional, non-polluting remedies that have been passed down through generations. These "small" remedies can often solve "big" problems. Orchid enthusiasts might want to try them out and see what works best for their plants. **1. Tea Bran** Tea bran, also known as tea seed cake, is a byproduct of tea oil production. It is commonly used by farmers to wash clothes. Tea bran contains saponins and glycosides, which become alkaline when soaked in water. This solution has strong contact and stomach toxicity against pests. - Soak crushed tea bran in boiling water at a 1:5 ratio for a day and night. Pour the liquid around the pots and place the pots on top to deter snails effectively. - Spraying the tea bran solution on orchids helps control aphids and red spider mites with up to 90% effectiveness. - Tea bran water can also kill crickets. Pouring it into the soil will cause earthworms to surface, allowing you to remove them. Some believe that crickets can damage orchid roots, while others think they help aerate the soil and act as natural fertilizer. The choice is up to each orchid grower based on their experience. **2. Odorous Vegetables (Garlic, Green Onions, Leeks, Ginger, Onions, etc.)** These vegetables have strong odors that repel or kill pests. - Crush 25g of garlic, extract the juice, and dilute it in 10 liters of water. Spray immediately to control aphids, spider mites, scale insects, and gray mold. Place small pieces of garlic in the soil to eliminate ants. - Soak chopped green onions in water at a 1:30 ratio for a day. Filter and spray several times daily to control aphids and soft pests. - Mix 1kg of ginger with half a catty of water, strain, and spray to control aphids. - Combine amaranth juice with fresh water at a 1:60 ratio and spray twice daily to treat melasma. - Soak 15g of chopped onion bulbs in 2 jin of water for 7 hours. After filtering, spray the solution to eliminate red spider mites and aphids. **3. Cigarette Butts** Tobacco contains nicotine, which is toxic to many pests. - Soak 20 cigarette butts in quicklime and water, filter, then dilute with 30 parts water. Spray on orchids to eliminate ants and other non-waxy pests. **4. Washing Powder** Washing powder can dissolve the waxy coating of scale insects and suffocate them. - Mix a small amount of detergent in warm water and dilute to 1000 times. Spray to kill aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites. Dilute to 600 times and spray every three days for three times to eliminate scale insects. - Mix pig bile and fresh water at 1:100, add a bit of detergent, and spray to prevent anthracnose and soft rot. After spraying, rinse the leaves thoroughly to avoid damage. **5. Alcohol** Mix white spirit and water in a 1:2 ratio. Spray once a week for three weeks to eliminate scale insects. **6. Orange Peels** Place citrus peels on the pot floor to prevent ants and other pests from entering. Cut the peels into pieces and sprinkle on the soil surface for a few days without watering to treat aphids and scale insects. **7. Brown Sugar** Mix powdered brown sugar with boiled water at a 1:100 ratio. Cool and spray every three days for three times to control downy mildew, powdery mildew, black spot, and leaf blight. **8. Diesel** Mix diesel and water at a 1:60 ratio, then dilute 100 times and spray to treat scale insects. **9. Grass Ash** Soak plant ash in water at a 1:50 ratio for two days. Filter and spray on orchids to control aphids and provide potassium fertilizer. **10. Vinegar** Mix vinegar and water at a 1:8 ratio and spray the back of the leaves to control scale insects. If the insects are adults, slightly increase the acidity and spray every three days for three times. Vinegar can also help eliminate black spot, powdery mildew, leaf spot, and yellowing disease.
