Litchi Pollen Collection and Storage Technology

The male flower spikes that are protruding from the anther but have not yet split open were collected. The filaments had not elongated, and the pollen was considered mature. These samples were placed in kraft paper envelopes and wrapped in plastic film to protect them. They were then stored in an environmental chamber at temperatures of 5°C, 8°C, or 12°C, and checked periodically for germination rates. A control group was kept at room temperature, between 20°C and 30°C, and the germination rate of pollen collected both when the anther was cracked and when it was not was tested. The results showed that litchi pollen maintained a normal germination rate after being stored at 5–12°C for up to 50 days. However, after 75 days, the germination rate started to decline. When stored at room temperature, the germination rate of pollen remained similar to that of fresh pollen for the first three days, but dropped significantly after six days. Interestingly, the germination rate of pollen collected from anthers that had extended but not cracked was comparable to that of pollen from cracked anthers. These findings suggest that early collection of litchi pollen can be effectively preserved at low temperatures (5–12°C) for several weeks, making it suitable for use in artificial pollination practices. This is particularly useful for managing pollination timing in orchards where environmental conditions may not always be ideal for natural pollination.
