Autumn season trimming of northern cold season lawns

Cool-season turfgrass is known for its early green-up in spring, late yellowing in fall, and a long period of green color. It plays a significant role in urban greening projects in northern China. However, this type of grass thrives in cooler climates. After enduring hot and humid summers, it becomes crucial to implement proper maintenance practices during autumn to help the turf recover and maintain optimal growth conditions. This is a key challenge that lawn managers must address.

First, watering is essential. Autumn in northern regions is typically dry, windy, and prone to drought. Therefore, regular irrigation is necessary. If possible, water every 5 to 7 days. The best times are before 10 am or after 4 pm to avoid evaporation. Each watering should be thorough, especially during prolonged dry periods, aiming to moisten the soil to a depth of at least 15 centimeters. This encourages deep root development and long-term health. On sloped lawns, water slowly to allow for better absorption and prevent runoff, particularly at the top of the slope. When using sprinklers, follow three rules: use fine nozzles or mist sprays, apply water at a rate equal to the soil’s absorption speed, and avoid water pooling. A wet soil depth of 10 to 15 cm is ideal after each irrigation.

Second, fertilization is important but often neglected. In autumn, applying two rounds of fertilizer from late August to late October can significantly improve root growth, reduce excessive shoot growth, enhance cold tolerance, and extend the green season. This also promotes earlier spring regrowth. For example, applying 18 grams of urea per square meter provides sufficient nutrients for healthy growth. Fertilizer should be applied when the grass is dry to prevent leaf burn. It must be spread evenly and watered in immediately to ensure proper absorption and avoid damage to the lawn.

Third, mowing is a critical task. Cool-season grass grows rapidly between mid-May and mid-October, requiring frequent cutting—up to 13 times a year. Timely mowing prevents the grass from becoming tall, thin, and weak. Poor air circulation and insufficient light can lead to disease and even death. To avoid damaging the lawn, mow when the ground is firm and not wet. Ideal mowing times are when the grass is dry to minimize stress. The cutting height should not be lower than 5 cm, and on slopes, the grass should be kept flat. Clippings should be removed promptly to improve airflow and reduce disease risk. Keep the mower blade sharp to reduce leaf damage. Mowing helps maintain an attractive appearance, encourages new growth, and prevents flowering, which consumes valuable energy. The final mowing before winter should not be less than 8 cm to ensure better cold tolerance and survival through the winter.

Fourth, pest control is vital. As temperatures drop in autumn, the occurrence of diseases and pests usually decreases. Practices such as moderate mowing, timely weed removal, and maintaining proper moisture levels can help reduce infestations. The principle of pest management is “prevention first, with both prevention and control.” Rust disease is one of the main issues in autumn, but with prompt action, it can be managed without causing serious damage.
