As the seedling period approaches, it is essential to focus on improving the survival rate of juvenile scallops during cultivation. The following key measures should be taken: 1. Choose an appropriate pond for seedling rearing. Ideal ponds are rectangular and oriented east-west, with a sandy or firm bottom, at least 1.5 meters deep, and salinity below 35 parts per thousand. The pond must be free from pollution coming from open seas. Before filling the pond with water, the bottom should be thoroughly cleaned and exposed to prevent contamination. Avoid stocking large benthic fish or species that require high feed input in the same pond to maintain water quality. 2. Maintain excellent water quality. Ten to fifteen days before introducing juveniles, the water level should be raised to 60–80 cm, and fertilization should begin. Apply about 3.5 grams of nitrogen fertilizer per cubic meter of water, with phosphate fertilizer being roughly ten times the amount of nitrogen. The bait density should be maintained between 5 to 200,000 cells/mL. Fourty-five days before the seedlings arrive, gradually raise the water level to the maximum, aiming for a transparency of 70–80 cm. If the transparency becomes too high and the temperature rises significantly during midday, add a small amount of inorganic fertilizer to maintain balance. If the transparency is too low and the bait density is too high, increase shellfish density for a few days before stocking to improve clarity without overloading the system. Before releasing the seedlings, strictly monitor all water quality parameters to ensure they meet required standards. After stocking, daily water exchange should exceed 20 times the volume of the pond. If water color changes, indicating aging or potential mortality, replace the water or move the seedlings promptly. 3. Select high-quality juvenile seedlings. When removing them from the hatchery, choose uniform, firmly attached, and appropriately dense seedlings with less than 15 days of attachment time. The water conditions in the nursery should closely match those of the rearing pond. A stable water temperature around 13°C is ideal for keeping the seedlings. Ensure that the single-cell algae used as bait are diverse and sufficiently available to promote healthy growth. 4. Increase the size of delivered seedlings. Instead of using 500-micron seedlings, aim for 700–800 microns, which significantly improves survival rates during the early stages. 5. Follow proper shipment procedures. Personnel involved in bagging should receive training to ensure efficient and careful handling. Minimize bagging time and secure the base of the scallops to the bag mouth using polyethylene wire to prevent damage from friction. Transport seedlings in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Ensure the bags are sealed, moist, and cooled during transit, and try to keep transportation time as short as possible. 6. Determine the appropriate seedling density. For 500-micron seedlings, no more than 100 million per water surface area and 30,000 per bag should be used. As the size of the seedlings increases, reduce the number accordingly to avoid overcrowding.
