Goosegrass

The scientific name of this plant is *Eleusine indica* (L.) Gaerth. It is an annual grassy herb commonly known as valerian or gourd grass. This species is widely distributed across the country and is considered a significant weed in agricultural systems, particularly in cotton, bean, potato, vegetable crops, and orchards. ![Image placeholder](#) **Morphological Characteristics:** The plant has slender, sprawling or semi-erect stems that can grow up to 15–90 cm in height. The leaf blades are flat, with hairy leaf sheaths and a short ligule. The inflorescence consists of 2–7 spikes arranged like fingers at the top of the culm. Each spike is slightly wider, with densely packed spikelets on either side of the rachis. Each spikelet contains 3–6 florets. The palea and lemma are awnless, and the first lemma is shorter than the second glume. The first lemma features three prominent veins, a keel, a rough ridge, and small cilia. The caryopsis is ovate, ranging from brown to black, and exhibits distinct wavy ridges. The plant reproduces primarily through seeds. **Ecological Characteristics:** In Shanghai, *E. indica* typically emerges in mid to late April, reaching peak density in mid to early May, with fewer individuals appearing in June through August. Some seeds can complete two life cycles within a single growing season. Mature seeds can remain dormant in the soil for over three months. Germination occurs most effectively in the top 0–1 cm of soil, and seeds buried deeper than 3 cm rarely germinate. The optimal temperature range for germination is 20–40°C, and light is required for successful germination. Germination rates are low under constant temperature conditions, and no germination occurs in the absence of light.
