The installation of safety valve and the main points of piping layout design

1. Safety valves should be installed in an upright position and as close as possible to the equipment or piping they are protecting. If the distance between the protected system and the safety valve is significant, the total pressure drop from the equipment to the inlet of the safety valve must not exceed 3% of the relief valve's set pressure. This ensures that the valve can operate effectively under the intended conditions.

2. An inspection platform must be provided for the safety valve. When installing heavy-duty safety valves, it is important to consider the possibility of lifting the valve after disassembly. In such cases, a crane or lifting boom should be available to facilitate maintenance and replacement.

3. The inlet piping of the safety valve should be equipped with a long-radius elbow. This minimizes flow turbulence and reduces pressure loss, ensuring optimal performance of the safety valve during operation.

4. The outlet piping of the safety valve must be designed to ensure that back pressure does not exceed a certain percentage of the safety valve’s set pressure. For standard spring-loaded safety valves, the maximum allowable back pressure should not exceed 10% of the valve’s operating pressure. Exceeding this limit may affect the valve’s ability to open properly and release pressure when needed.

5. If the medium being discharged by the safety valve contains condensable vapors or liquid, the outlet of the safety valve should be positioned above the main vent line. This prevents condensate from entering the main line and causing blockages or operational issues. If this is not feasible, appropriate drainage measures should be implemented.

6. When the safety valve discharges into a closed system, the outlet pipe should be angled at 45 degrees toward the top of the main discharge line. This helps prevent condensate from flowing back into the branch line and reduces the back pressure on the safety valve, improving its overall performance and reliability.

7. If shut-off valves are installed on both the inlet and outlet of the safety valve, a single-gate valve should be used and sealed to prevent leakage. The valve stem should be installed horizontally to avoid corrosion or loosening of the connecting parts. Additionally, if a bypass valve is installed, it should be kept isolated and not used during normal operation to ensure the safety valve remains functional when needed.
