Wheat grows up and leaves fall down

In the late growth stage of wheat, maintaining root vitality is crucial for grain development. As the plant matures, root activity tends to decline, which directly affects grain weight and can lead to early plant death, making it difficult for the crop to fully mature. Therefore, during this critical phase, enhancing root health becomes a top priority. One effective method is to ensure proper drainage by clearing ditches early, allowing for controlled irrigation and preventing waterlogging. Especially in rainy conditions, it's essential to lower the water level in the field to maintain soil aeration and prevent root rot. Keeping the soil well-drained and free from excess moisture helps sustain root function and overall plant health. Another key aspect is protecting the leaves, particularly the flag leaves, which are the main source of photosynthetic material for grain filling. To preserve leaf health, it's important to manage both water and nutrient supply effectively. On fields that show signs of nutrient deficiency, targeted fertilization combined with foliar sprays can be beneficial. For instance, applying a 1–2% urea solution or 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate during the early grain-filling stage can help delay leaf aging, improve resistance to dry hot winds, and boost photosynthesis. This not only enhances grain number and weight but also supports the overall yield potential of the crop. Preventing lodging is equally important. Late-stage lodging can significantly reduce wheat yields by up to 30% or more, depending on the severity. Early intervention is key. One strategy is to gently shake off morning dew from plants on sunny days, which helps control excessive growth. Applying wood ash around the base of the plants can strengthen the stems and improve resistance to lodging. Watering should be done without wind to avoid weakening the roots. Additionally, in densely planted areas, thinning out some plants or cutting back the upper leaves of broad-leafed varieties can help balance the plant’s structure and reduce the risk of falling. If the wheat has already lodged, it's best not to manually upright the plants; instead, allow them to recover naturally, as their stalks may still contribute to the final yield.
