In the later growth stage of wheat, maintaining root vitality becomes crucial for grain development. As the plant matures, root activity declines, which can lead to premature plant death and insufficient nutrient uptake during the grain-filling phase. To address this, it's essential to focus on root management. One effective method is to ensure proper drainage by clearing ditches early, especially in wet conditions, to prevent waterlogging. Keeping the soil aerated and dry helps maintain root health and supports better nutrient absorption.
Another key aspect is protecting the leaves, particularly the flag leaf, which plays a vital role in photosynthesis during the grain-filling period. Proper nutrient and water management is essential here. Applying foliar sprays, such as 1–2% urea solution or 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate, can help delay leaf aging, improve resistance to hot and dry winds, and boost photosynthetic efficiency. This, in turn, increases both grain number and weight.
Preventing lodging is also critical. Late-season lodging can reduce yields by 20% to over 50%, depending on severity. Early intervention is key. For example, shaking off morning dew on sunny days can help control excessive growth. Adding ash to the base of the plants can strengthen their stems and improve resistance to lodging. Watering should be done when there’s no wind to avoid root damage. In dense fields, thinning or cutting the upper portion of broad leaves can reduce the risk of collapse. If lodging has already occurred, it’s best to let the plants recover naturally rather than trying to support them manually.
