Not suitable for pesticides and fertilizers on vegetables

Some pesticides and fertilizers are not suitable for use on vegetables. Choosing the right products is crucial to ensuring food safety and protecting human health. Using inappropriate chemicals can lead to serious health risks, including poisoning and long-term damage. First, certain pesticides should not be applied to vegetables. 1. Organic mercury preparations, such as Xi Li Sheng, Sai Li San, Fu Tu Long, and Hg Mercury, are highly toxic to humans and animals. These substances can be absorbed through skin contact, especially if there are open wounds, or by inhalation during spraying. Once inside the body, they tend to accumulate and are difficult to eliminate, leading to chronic poisoning over time. 2. Organic phosphorus pesticides, like 1065, 3911, and fly phosphorus, are also dangerous. They can enter the body through the mouth, skin, or respiratory system, causing severe poisoning. These types of pesticides are particularly harmful because they can affect the nervous system and cause long-term health issues. 3. Organic chlorine-based pesticides, such as DDT, may have lower acute toxicity but are persistent in the environment. They do not break down easily in soil or living organisms, leading to long-term accumulation. When vegetables are treated with these chemicals, residues can build up in the human body, increasing the risk of chronic poisoning and other health problems. To protect public health and effectively manage pests, it's essential to use low-toxicity, fast-degrading pesticides. Examples include trichlorfon, dichlorvos, marathon, iminophos, carbendazim, and thiophanate. Although these are less toxic, they must still be used according to strict guidelines, typically waiting at least 7–10 days before harvesting to ensure safety. Second, some fertilizers should not be applied to vegetables. There are many types of chemical fertilizers, and while some improve yield and quality, others can cause contamination. For instance, ammonium nitrate and other nitrate-based fertilizers are not recommended for leafy vegetables like cabbage, lettuce, and spinach. These fertilizers increase nitrate levels in plants, which can be converted into nitrites in the body—substances that are toxic and potentially carcinogenic. Similarly, fertilizers containing chlorine, such as ammonium chloride and potassium chloride, should not be used on crops like tomatoes, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. When these fertilizers break down, they release ions that can harm plant roots, reduce sugar and starch content, and even kill the crop in severe cases. In summary, selecting safe and appropriate pesticides and fertilizers is vital for both agricultural productivity and consumer safety. Always follow recommended application guidelines and prioritize products that minimize environmental and health risks. (Pan Jilan)
