Cancer or diabetes: the choice of the body

Release date: 2015-02-04

A recent study found that patients' effects on diabetes medications decreased after cancer treatment.

This result suggests that the decline in the effectiveness of diabetes treatment may affect patient survival, and partly explains why patients who use diabetes drugs after cancer treatment have a higher mortality rate than those who have hyperglycemia. Research author Dr. Marjolein MJ Zanders believes.

Dr. Zanders believes that patients and physicians should be very cautious about the use of diabetes drugs after cancer treatment. The health of a patient is affected by many factors and cannot be ignored.

Overall, the researchers compared the effects (MPR) of 3,281 patients with both cancer (postoperative) and diabetes and 12,981 diabetic patients without cancer. The results showed that patients with postoperative cancer had a 6.3% decrease in MPR values for the drug compared to the control group. There is no definitive explanation for this decline, but the researchers have made many assumptions. Dr. Zanders believes that there is still a major internal logic that is not clear: is this result in the patient's body's preference for cancer, so there is no way to take care of diabetes, or is it a warning doctor to stop treatment?

The study included a total of 52,228 patients from the Southern Netherlands Medical Database, basically over 30 years old, with an average age of 68 years. He has been receiving antidiabetic medications from 1998 to 2011.

Among the cancers studied, there was no significant decrease in prostate cancer and breast cancer. However, MPR values in the esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, pancreatic cancer, and liver cancer decreased significantly. In addition, the worsening MPR of cancer patients is more significant than that of early patients. The authors also found that the decline in MPR is also strongly associated with the choice of related drugs: sulfonylurea and metformin are more likely to cause a decrease in MPR relative to insulin. As the degree of deterioration increases in the process of tumorigenesis, the more obvious the decrease of MPR value, indicating that the body has to temporarily abandon the control of diabetes-related metabolic disorders in order to fight the tumor.

"In later studies, the reason for the decline in MPR values needs to be derived from studies of different cancer types." Dr. Zanders said: "The current conclusion is that although diabetes is more cancer treatment purposes, it may be used in practice. Need to be integrated."
