Breeding sheep management technology

Breeding sheep refers to young sheep that are between the time of weaning and their first breeding. Typically, this period starts around 3-4 months of age, when lambs grow rapidly, showing strong weight gain and high nutritional demands. By the time they reach 8 months, their growth rate begins to slow down. During the early breeding phase, especially for newly weaned lambs, their rumen is still developing, which limits their ability to efficiently digest roughage. As a result, their diet should be primarily based on concentrates, supplemented with high-quality hay and green, juicy feed. The crude fiber content in their diet should not exceed 15% to 20%, ensuring they receive enough energy for healthy development. As the lambs enter the rearing stage, their rumen function becomes more mature, allowing them to better process roughage such as pasture, silage, and stored straw. At this point, the proportion of roughage in their diet can be increased to 25% to 30%. However, it’s still important to include concentrate feeds or high-quality silage and hay to ensure balanced nutrition and support continued growth. Proper management during the breeding period plays a critical role in the reproductive success of ewes. Female lambs should ideally reach a weight of about 40 kg by 6 months of age and be ready for breeding by 8 months. In many cases, over 80% of female lambs born in one year are bred within the same year. Therefore, effective care and feeding during this crucial period are essential to ensure their health, fertility, and long-term productivity.
