#PROJECTdecor:: DIY White Washed Wood Sign

The idea for this project began with a special sign I wanted to create for an upcoming Pink Pony Party—a project I’ll share all the details of soon. My two-year-old was happily seated in the shopping cart at Home Depot as we made our way through the aisles, picking out two 2x4s and heading directly to the cutting station. On this particular day, I was dressed up in a sundress and wearing makeup, which seemed to signal to the staff that I needed some assistance. Sure enough, they were incredibly helpful, quickly slicing my boards in half with cheerful smiles. It was easily one of the fastest trips I've ever had at Home Depot. Back home, armed with my freshly cut pieces, I lined them up on the garage floor and attached a couple of scraps of leftover wood to the back with screws to keep everything secure. Presto! The basic sign was complete. For a few weeks, it sat proudly on my mantel, unadorned, and surprisingly, I didn’t mind its simplicity at all. Since I planned to repurpose the sign for use in the house after the party, I wanted something versatile—nothing too specific or party-themed. So while ponies were out, "Celebrate" was definitely in. After choosing a font I loved, printing the letters onto card stock, and carefully cutting them out, I arranged them on the sign and secured them in place with a glue stick. Mixing a bit of white paint with water gave me the perfect whitewash effect. Initially, it looked a bit too stark, but within moments, it softened into an even, smooth finish that highlighted the natural wood grain beautifully. ![Celebrate Sign-1](src) Once the entire sign was painted, we carefully removed the letter templates to reveal the final design. A few touch-ups with a small brush dipped in nail polish remover smoothed out any rough edges, and after letting it dry overnight, we attached three feet of rope to the back using two conduit straps for hanging. ![Celebrate Sign-2](src) ![Celebrate Sign-3](src) ![Celebrate Sign-4](src) ![Celebrate Sign-5](src) ![Celebrate Sign-6](src) Currently, the sign is hanging above my under-decorated mantel, but I might relocate it to my kids' room—it'd fit perfectly there too. We'll see how things progress! Here's a quick breakdown of the costs: - **Two 2x4s**: $7.50 - **Three feet of rope**: $3 - **Two 1/2" conduit straps**: $1.55 I already had white craft paint, brushes, cardstock, scissors, a glue stick, and screws on hand, so those weren't additional expenses. **Total Cost: $12.05** If you're working on any fun projects or have spaces you'd like to share, snap a picture and tag it on Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag **#PROJECTdecor**! We’d love to see what you’re up to. Plus, there are some absolutely fantastic prizes lined up for participants, with winners selected from the hashtagged photos. Get creative and share away! xo, ![Signature](src) --- This project reminded me how much I enjoy DIY crafts. They're not only budget-friendly but also deeply satisfying. Whether it's repurposing old items or creating something entirely new, there's always a sense of accomplishment. If you have any favorite DIY tips or tricks, feel free to share—I’m always looking to learn more!
