Orchard soil fertilization

Orchard soil fertilization is a crucial practice for promoting healthy tree growth and maximizing nutrient uptake. Both organic and inorganic fertilizers should be applied below the soil surface, which helps the roots absorb nutrients more effectively and reduces fertilizer loss due to runoff or evaporation. Proper placement of fertilizers ensures that the nutrients reach the root zone where they are most needed.

The first method is full garden fertilization, which involves spreading the fertilizer evenly across the entire orchard and mixing it into the soil using a hoe or by turning the soil. If there is grass present, the fertilizer can be sprinkled directly onto the grass. This technique is highly efficient, covering a large area and making it easier for tree roots to access nutrients. It is especially suitable for mature trees and densely planted orchards.

The second method is ring fertilization, where a circular trench is dug around the outer edge of the tree's canopy. If a large amount of fertilizer is required, the trench can be made deeper. After applying the fertilizer, the soil is immediately covered. This method is ideal for young trees and early-bearing fruit trees but not recommended for trees that are too closely spaced, as it may cause root damage.

The third method is radial (or fan-shaped) fertilization. Trenches are dug from the base of the tree, extending outward from the inner part of the canopy to beyond the outer edge of the tree’s projection. Typically, 4 to 6 trenches are created, with their width and depth depending on the amount of fertilizer used. After application, the soil is covered. This method causes less root disturbance and encourages better nutrient absorption, making it well-suited for mature trees. However, it is not recommended for overly dense plantings. In the following year, the location of the trenches should be shifted to ensure even distribution of nutrients.

The fourth method involves fertilizing between the rows of fruit trees. Ditches are dug along the rows, and multiple trenches can be created if necessary. Fertilizer is placed in the ditches, and the soil is promptly covered. This approach is convenient for mechanical or animal-assisted operations and is widely used in many foreign orchards due to its high efficiency. However, it requires flat terrain and easy access for trenching and irrigation. Yutian County, for example, has adopted this method successfully in certain areas.
