Zinc is an essential trace element that plays a crucial role in the healthy growth of fruit trees. As trees age and productivity increases, their demand for zinc also rises, especially in areas with sandy soils, saline-alkali land, or orchards with extensive management practices. When fruit trees lack zinc, they often display several visible symptoms: the tips of shoots become shortened, leaves are narrow and clustered, flowers are small and fail to set fruit, resulting in deformed and low-quality fruits. In severe cases, tree growth may weaken, and the entire plant could die.
To address zinc deficiency in fruit trees, several effective measures can be taken. First, apply zinc fertilizer to the soil. For young fruit trees (7–8 years old), it's recommended to apply 100–200 grams per tree, while older trees (over 10 years) should receive 250–300 grams. This should be done in combination with base fertilizers for better absorption.
Another method is root spraying with zinc sulfate. Before bud break, spray the entire tree with a 1–5% zinc sulfate solution. After the leaves have fully expanded, switch to a weaker concentration—0.1–0.4% zinc sulfate. Adding 0.3% urea to the solution can enhance its effectiveness.
A third approach involves using a zinc ash spray. The formula is zinc sulfate: quicklime: water = 1:2:240. This mixture is prepared similarly to Bordeaux mixture and is particularly useful in preventing and treating zinc deficiency.
Finally, a zinc liquid spray can be used. The preparation ratio is zinc sulfate: copper sulfate: quicklime: water = 0.5:0.5:2:240. This solution helps improve nutrient uptake and is ideal for foliar application during critical growth stages.
By implementing these strategies, growers can effectively manage zinc deficiency and promote healthier, more productive fruit trees. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are key to maintaining optimal zinc levels in orchards.
