Drought specialists are involved in supporting rice production
The severe drought that has affected Heilongjiang Province since 2007 has significantly impacted rice production, leading to poor harvests, low selling prices, and slow market turnover. These challenges have raised concerns among farmers and agricultural experts. Currently, rice cultivation in Harbin is entering the nursery preparation phase. To address these issues, the chief agronomist from the Heilongjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences has offered five key recommendations to local rice farmers.
First, water management is critical due to the ongoing drought. Since the summer of 2007, there has been little to no effective rainfall, and river levels have dropped to historic lows. This is the driest period in the past 40 years. Farmers must prepare for water shortages during the spring planting and transplanting stages. Efficient water use, such as careful land leveling and controlled irrigation, can help conserve water. It's also important to ensure proper drainage after soaking the fields to minimize water loss.
Second, with rising fertilizer costs—especially for phosphate-based products—farmers are encouraged to increase the use of organic fertilizers. Reducing chemical fertilizer application not only lowers production costs but also improves soil health and nutrient efficiency. When purchasing chemical fertilizers, it's essential to verify the N, P, K content, particularly the phosphorus level, to avoid ineffective products.
Third, farmers should avoid switching from rice to other crops like corn or soybeans. Although corn prices are low and soybean prices fluctuate, rice remains a more stable option. The new rice protection price in Heilongjiang has increased to 0.79 yuan per catty, offering better financial security. Additionally, dryland farming can lead to lower yields due to cooler soil temperatures.
Fourth, securing a good market is crucial. While rice prices this year are relatively low, high-quality varieties can fetch much higher prices. For example, "Daohuaxiang 2" was purchased at 1.24 yuan per catty by a local processing company. Farmers should focus on producing premium rice and establish direct links with processing companies to access high-value markets.
Finally, seed selection plays a vital role. Farmers should purchase seeds from reputable sources, such as research institutions or large seed stores. It’s best to stick with well-established local varieties unless necessary. Seed purity and germination rates should be checked before planting. In 2007, due to high temperatures, choosing early-maturing varieties is recommended to ensure a successful harvest. New varieties should be approved for local conditions and have an accumulated temperature requirement that is 150-200 degrees less than the local average to ensure a high maturity rate.
