Culture techniques of the yellow-edge shell turtle
The yellow-rimmed shell turtle holds significant economic value due to its high demand in both the medical and ornamental markets. Its meat is not only tender and flavorful but also believed to have nourishing properties, including balancing yin and yang, detoxifying the body, and even offering potential anti-cancer benefits. As a result, it has become one of the most sought-after species for health and disease prevention. In China, the medical community primarily uses this turtle as a raw material to produce "broken plate turtles" and "broken plate injections," which are effective treatments for conditions such as tuberculosis, herpes bleeding, and chemotherapy-induced leukopenia. Beyond its medicinal use, the yellow-rimmed shell turtle is also prized for its aesthetic appeal, with a unique and attractive appearance that makes it popular among pet lovers. Due to its high value, wild populations have drastically declined over the years, leading to a growing supply-demand gap. Prices have risen sharply—from 180 yuan per kilogram in 1995 to 450–550 yuan today—indicating strong potential for artificial breeding.
In terms of physical characteristics, the yellow-rimmed shell turtle is easily identifiable by its high carapace, which is nearly half the length of its body. The head is olive-green with a distinct yellow "U"-shaped mark behind the eyes, and the eyes are large with clear tympanic membranes. The carapace is typically red or brown-red, with a pale yellow center and concentric patterns on each scute. The plastron is dark brown, connected to the carapace via ligaments, allowing the turtle to retract fully into its shell when threatened. Males can be distinguished from females by their more pointed shells, longer tails, and more elongated bodies, while females tend to have broader shells and shorter tails.
In the wild, these turtles prefer forest edges, shrubs, and rocky areas in hilly regions. They are mostly nocturnal, hiding during the day in caves, under rocks, or in dense vegetation. Yellow-rimmed shell turtles are known for being relatively bold and non-aggressive, often living in groups. They are semi-aquatic, preferring shallow water for drinking and basking. Their activity levels vary with temperature: they are more active during midday when temperatures range between 25–34°C and less active in cooler mornings and evenings. During winter, they hibernate from December to March, seeking shelter in dry, warm spots like under bushes or in sandy areas.
For artificial breeding, turtle ponds should include both land and shallow water areas. A suitable setup includes nesting areas, feeding zones, and shallow pools for swimming. The environment should mimic natural habitats, with sandy grounds for egg-laying and shaded areas for resting. Feeding is essential for healthy growth, and the diet should be varied, including vegetables, fruits, small fish, worms, and commercial feeds. The food intake depends on temperature, with higher consumption during warmer months. Proper hygiene is crucial—water should be changed regularly, and disinfectants added to prevent disease. During hot summer months, shade is necessary to keep the turtles cool, and in winter, soft sand or hay is provided for hibernation.
Breeding occurs from April to October, with females laying 2–4 eggs at a time. Eggs are laid in loose soil, and artificial incubation can be done using a wooden box filled with sand. With proper care, hatchlings can emerge after about 50–60 days. Disease prevention is key, and regular cleaning, disinfection, and the use of antibiotics in feed help maintain health. Overall, the yellow-rimmed shell turtle offers promising opportunities for sustainable farming and conservation efforts.
