Corn feeding pigs pay attention

Corn is a common feed ingredient for pigs, but it's important to use it correctly to maximize its nutritional value and efficiency. Here are some key tips for feeding corn to pigs effectively: 1. **Avoid Feeding Pure Corn** Feeding pigs with just corn is inefficient. It takes about 6 kilograms of corn to produce 1 kilogram of weight gain. By using a balanced compound feed, this ratio improves significantly—only 2.5 to 3 kilograms of corn are needed per kilogram of weight gain. This not only saves feed costs but also ensures better growth performance. 2. **Saccharify Before Feeding** Saccharification helps improve the digestibility of corn. When corn flour is heated with water and left to ferment, part of the starch converts into sugar, making it more palatable for pigs. To do this, mix corn flour with twice its volume in hot water, stir into a paste, then cover with a 5 cm layer of dry corn flour. After 3–4 hours, the mixture becomes saccharified and ready for use. 3. **Add Protein Sources** Corn has low protein content and poor quality, which isn't enough to meet the nutritional needs of growing pigs. To enhance the diet, add 15% soybean or rapeseed cake. For piglets, include 5% fish meal to support their development and immune system. 4. **Supplement with Minerals** Corn lacks essential minerals like calcium, phosphorus, and trace elements such as selenium, iron, copper, zinc, and manganese. Adding bone meal, calcium hydrogen phosphate, and mineral supplements ensures a well-balanced diet that supports bone health and overall growth. 5. **Provide Vitamins** Corn is low in vitamins, so it’s best to supplement with green feeds like grass or leafy vegetables. If green feed isn’t available, you can add a vitamin premix to the feed to prevent deficiencies and maintain pig health. 6. **Use Crushed Corn Promptly** Once corn is crushed, it should be used quickly. Due to its high fat content, it can go rancid within a short time. Ideally, crushed corn should be fed within 10–15 days. In summer, it’s even better to use it within 10 days to avoid spoilage. 7. **Soak Before Feeding** Soaking corn before feeding makes it easier for pigs to chew and digest. Mix corn flour with 1 to 1.5 times its volume in water and let it soak for 2 hours. This softens the grains and increases nutrient absorption. By following these practices, you can make the most out of corn as a pig feed while ensuring your animals receive a balanced and nutritious diet.
