Bath and Bedtime Routines for Kids

As a mom of three, I’ve had my fair share of sleepless nights and bath-time meltdowns. Recently, I was asked by a few of you for an update on our current bedtime and bath routines, and I thought it was the perfect opportunity to share what’s working for us. Sleep and bath time can be such a big question in the parenting world. Some days our kids sleep like angels, and other days, well, let’s just say it’s a little chaotic. For context, even though our oldest had colic and early-night feedings were a necessity, by the time she was six months old, all three of my kids have been pretty good sleepers. Our youngest, Skylar, tends to wake up more often, especially when our schedules are disrupted due to travel. However, when we’re on a consistent routine, they all usually sleep through the night, which is a blessing in disguise. Here’s a peek at our typical nighttime schedule: **6:00 PM**: Dinner time. **6:30 PM**: Clean-up time and bath time. Depending on the day, we might skip baths or just give them a quick rinse. **7:00 PM**: Potty time, lotion, diaper change, and brushing teeth. I also turn on a diffuser in their room with calming essential oils like lavender and cedarwood to help them wind down. **7:30 PM**: Apply essential oils on the bottoms of their feet—lavender or cedarwood specifically, as this area is known to carry stress. **7:40 PM**: Lights out, fan on, and a final story before tucking them in. If Skylar seems particularly tired, I’ll rock him for a few minutes before placing him in his crib, awake but drowsy. By around 8 PM, everyone is usually fast asleep. Occasionally, Skylar will squirm around trying to find his comfort zone, but it rarely lasts long. Traveling definitely impacts how quickly he falls asleep, so on those nights, I’ll often stay nearby, singing softly until he adjusts to his surroundings. Now, onto the products we swear by for our nightly rituals: 1. **Minimalism is Key**: Over the years, I’ve learned that less truly is more. For example, I used to have a whole drawer full of baby towels and robes, but now we just rely on regular towels from our linen closet. It saves space and reduces clutter. 2. **Aveeno® Baby Wash & Shampoo**: My go-to for all three kids. It’s tear-free, soap-free, and paraben-free, making it gentle on sensitive skin while still being effective. Plus, it contains natural oat extract for added hydration. 3. **Bath Letters**: These have been a staple in our household since Aliyah was a baby. They’re great for teething toddlers who love to chew on anything. 4. **Aveeno® Soothing Bath**: A lifesaver for those times when our kids’ skin gets irritated or develops rashes. It’s a natural solution that soothes and calms irritated skin. 5. **Essential Oils**: I’m a firm believer in the power of essential oils. Lavender, cedarwood, and wild orange are my favorites. They help promote relaxation and better sleep, and they’re completely natural. 6. **Lifefactory Bottles**: Our kids’ bottles of choice are the silicone-sleeved glass bottles from Lifefactory. They’re durable, easy to clean, and safe for little hands. 7. **Comfortable Pajamas**: Gymboree’s Eric Carle collection is always a hit with the boys. Comfortable pajamas are a must for a restful night. 8. **White Noise**: We’ve always had a fan in their room to create white noise. It helps them sleep through the night and has been linked to reducing the risk of SIDS. If you’re not comfortable with fans, a white noise machine or app works just as well. 9. **Baby Monitor App**: After losing all our baby monitors during a decluttering phase, we discovered there’s an app for that. Using an iPad as a monitor has been a game-changer, allowing us to keep tabs on them even when we’re not in the same room. One tip I’ve picked up along the way is that if your child is cranky, try giving them a warm bath. It often works wonders, though it depends on their level of exhaustion. Consistency is key—starting the bedtime routine early and encouraging self-soothing can make a huge difference in their sleep quality. I’d love to hear from you! What are your tried-and-true methods for getting your kids bathed and tucked in? Let’s share tips and tricks—we’re all in this together! xo [Your Name] P.S.
