Release date: 2008-07-14 A breakthrough in hereditary deafness detection has been achieved with the successful development of China's "Hereditary Deafness Gene Chip Detection System." This advanced technology offers a powerful tool for early identification, prevention, and treatment of congenital hearing impairments.
Previously, medical professionals had limited options to prevent or manage hereditary deafness, with low effectiveness. However, through joint research by the Biochip Beijing National Engineering Research Center and other institutions, this system enables quick and accurate identification of genetic causes behind hereditary deafness, allowing for more targeted treatment approaches.
Professor Sun Xibin, deputy director of the China Rehabilitation Research Center, highlighted that over 27.8 million people in China suffer from hearing impairments, making up 33.5% of the total disabled population. Approximately 60% of these cases are hereditary and can be passed on to future generations. Additionally, hearing loss remains one of the most common birth defects among newborns in China each year.
The system integrates the strengths of traditional sequencing techniques and gene chip technology, enabling rapid and simultaneous analysis of key mutation sites linked to hereditary deafness. It assists clinicians in diagnosing hearing issues at their root cause, helping patients identify the exact reason for their condition. Furthermore, it supports drug selection, evaluation of cochlear implants, lifestyle planning, and reproductive guidance.
With high accuracy, reliability, ease of use, and cost-effectiveness, this innovation is expected to significantly enhance China’s strategies for preventing hearing loss.
