Effective Cultivation and Management of Watermelon Sweetening
Watermelon sweetness is not only influenced by the variety itself, but also heavily affected by improper cultivation practices. Therefore, in watermelon farming, to enhance its sweetness, the following effective measures can be taken:
1. Increase the use of organic fertilizer: Apply 2,500 to 3,000 kg of well-rotted organic manure and 100 kg of cake fertilizer before plowing the field. This ensures that the soil is rich in nutrients, which helps improve the overall quality and sweetness of the fruit.
2. Apply potassium fertilizer: In the early stage of planting, apply 7–10 kg of potash fertilizer (without nitrogen) as a base fertilizer. During the fruiting period, add another 5 kg of potash. Additionally, spray 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate twice during the seedling stage. Alternatively, you can apply 25–30 kg of superphosphate per acre or use a mixture of cooked chicken manure and ash for better results.
3. Use Zenghua Ling (a plant growth enhancer): During the fruit enlargement phase, spray the leaves with 200–400 ppm of Zenghua Ling. This promotes sugar accumulation, leading to sweeter and more flavorful watermelons.
4. Spray borax solution: Applying boron fertilizer in the watermelon field helps prevent thick rinds and hollow fruits, while also increasing yield and improving fruit quality. Typically, dissolve 100 grams of borax in a small amount of hot water, then dilute it with 50 kg of fresh water. Spray this solution on the leaves 1–2 times before flowering, once every 7–10 days. You can also pour 1–1.5 kg of borax solution into each planting hole.
By implementing these techniques, farmers can significantly improve the sweetness and quality of their watermelons, making them more marketable and enjoyable for consumers. It's important to follow these steps carefully and consistently for the best results.
