Mr. Yao, who is in Beijing, is 53 years old. Since February of this year, he has felt the pain in his shoulders and back from time to time. He thought it was shoulder inflammation or muscle strain and didn't care. At the end of October, he still felt uncomfortable. He went to the hospital to find out that it might be a left scapula tumor. In mid-November, he was introduced to the Department of Trauma and Orthopaedics of Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University. The deputy chief physician of the department was consulted. The scapula tumor was about 10 cm in diameter and invaded 80% of the patient's left scapula. It must be surgically removed. .

When Yu Li and colleagues discussed the surgical plan, the muscles that maintain the function of the shoulder joint were attached to the scapula. After the scapula was invaded by the tumor according to the traditional method, if the reconstructive surgery was not performed, the attachment point of the muscle was gone, and the patient's activity. The function will be greatly affected, but the human shoulder blade is an irregular shape and reconstruction is extremely difficult. After careful study, according to the patient's imaging data, considering the tumor as a benign possibility, after obtaining the patient's consent, Yu Li decided to keep a small amount of scapula connected to the shoulder joint, the scapula that was not invaded by the tumor, and the removed scapula (about 80%) advanced. The 3D printing technology rebuilds the patient to maximize the patient's "back sleeve" function.

The doctor firstly based on the CT scan image of the patient's bilateral scapula, referring to the size and shape of the right scapula, and obtained the corresponding data before the left scapula was invaded by the tumor, and then used 3D technology to print a completely consistent model. A simulated surgery to remove the tumor is then performed. In order to ensure the accuracy of the operation, save the operation time, reduce the intraoperative bleeding and postoperative complications, Dr. Yu Li also designed a special osteotomy guide plate, in order to accurately remove the tumor while making the design of part of the scapula prosthesis and The retained human shoulder blades are perfectly matched. The doctor made several modifications to make every detail just right, and for the first time used titanium metal to directly print the artificial prosthesis of the defect.

When it was ready, on December 1st, Yu Li and his colleagues used only 1 hour and 50 minutes to successfully perform a tumor resection for the patient, and successfully placed a 3D printed partial scapula prosthesis. Postoperative X-ray and CT showed implantation. The prosthesis fits perfectly with the preserved scapula.

On December 6, Mr. Yao was discharged from the hospital. On the 22nd, he went to the hospital to remove the suture and the review was well restored.

Yu Li introduced that 3D printing manual custom surgery has been carried out in many hospitals in China in recent years, but there are not many artificial prostheses directly printed by metal 3D printing technology. In contrast, custom joints typically take 2 weeks from drawing to casting, while direct printing with metal materials takes only 1 day, saving patient hospital time and costs.
