High-yielding Cultivation Techniques of Bamboo Bamboo Shoots

1. The implementation of whip fat. From late May to early July, in combination with bamboo lining and the application of whipping fertilizer, organic fertilizer or special compound fertilizer can be scattered on the soil surface and then incorporated into the soil. The recommended amount is 1000 kg of organic fertilizer per acre, and 50 kg of compound fertilizer (or special fertilizer) per mu. This practice helps improve soil fertility and supports the healthy growth of whip bamboo shoots.

2. Irrigation management. Since nearly 90% of whip bamboo shoots are composed of water, sufficient water supply is crucial for both yield and quality. Our city has installed 11,000 mu of Chushan drip irrigation systems, ranking first in Ningbo. To make full use of this advantage, especially during July and August when rainfall is limited and the soil tends to dry out, it is essential to rely on the sprinkler irrigation system in Zhushan. Proper watering during these critical periods ensures optimal growth conditions for the bamboo shoots.

3. Maintaining a reasonable number of bamboo stalks. The typical number of bamboo shoots per plant ranges between 200-250. However, due to the impact of recent snow and ice disasters, the number of bamboos has decreased. It is important to maintain an appropriate density by avoiding excessive digging, ensuring that the remaining plants can thrive and produce high-quality shoots.

4. Timely harvesting. The growth period of whip bamboo shoots typically lasts from mid-May to early November, spanning about six months. June and July mark the peak season for shoot development. Harvesting should be done every other day during this time. If it rains, visibility in the forest may decrease, making it harder to spot new shoots, so harvesting can be delayed accordingly. Before the summer heat sets in, focus on harvesting thick and strong shoots, mainly those that have developed underground. After the summer heat, the focus shifts to harvesting the newer shoots, but no digging should occur after October when the new shoots are still developing.

5. Harvesting precautions. When digging up whip bamboo shoots, care must be taken not to dig too deeply, as this could damage the tender shoots. Shoots growing horizontally should be harvested, while digging along the slope should be avoided. After excavation, the holes should be covered with soil to protect the remaining roots. During hot and dry weather, it's best to suspend the digging process until temperatures cool down.

6. Pest control. The prevention and control of pests and diseases in bamboo forests should follow the principle of "prevention first, integrated management, and prevention over treatment." A combination of forestry measures, physical and mechanical methods, biological controls, and chemical treatments should be used. Common bamboo forest diseases include bamboo sooty mold, bamboo witches' broom, bamboo stem rust, and bamboo shoot disease. Insect pests such as bamboo shoot caterpillars, bamboo weavers, and bamboo borers cause significant damage. To manage these effectively, one method is to apply an oil ring around the base of the bamboo. In early April, mix 1 part butter with 3 parts engine oil and apply it evenly around the bamboo. This prevents nymphs from climbing up the stalks. The oil ring should be at least 10 cm wide. If nymphs get trapped under the ring, they can be manually removed or sprayed with green Weilei. Another preventive measure is weeding and clearing the wintering sites of pests. Although the recent snow and ice disasters have reduced insect populations, continued monitoring and control are still necessary to prevent future outbreaks.
