Heartache
The heart-broached chrysanthemum, also known as the *Coreopsis* species, is a perennial herb belonging to the Compositae family. It typically grows over 60 cm tall, with leaves resembling those of the Jerusalem artichoke—broad and lance-shaped. The plant produces large, capitate flower heads at the top of its stems, featuring bright lemon-yellow ray flowers and yellow-green tubular flowers at the center. It blooms from July through October, with fruits ripening in September.
Native to North America, this hardy plant is commonly found in the United States and Canada. It thrives in warm, sunny conditions and is highly tolerant of cold and drought. It prefers temperatures between 15°C and 28°C and can grow in a variety of soils, including loamy, sandy, slightly acidic, or slightly alkaline soils.
Propagation is usually done through seeds, with seedlings typically started in nurseries from August to September. Transplanting is done in mid-March, with spacing of about 15–20 cm between plants. Before planting, the soil should be tilled and enriched with organic fertilizers such as bean cake, hemp cake, or well-rotted chicken manure. During the growing season, watering once a week is sufficient. After flowering, dead foliage should be pruned to encourage new bud formation.
In gardens, heart-broached chrysanthemums are often used for edging flower beds or as ornamental plants in borders. In recent years, they have gained popularity as ground cover due to their vibrant golden flowers and lush green foliage, which create a lively and attractive landscape. Their low maintenance and strong growth make them an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced gardeners.
