The GKSS Biomaterials Development Research Center in Teltow, near Berlin, Germany, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said the new plastic can be deformed twice without a single direction. Researchers believe that this plastic has enormous potential for application in many areas. Professor Andreas Lendlein, head of the GKSS Research Center, said the new plastic can be used as an intelligent facility, implanted into the blood vessel through a minor procedure, and then inflated to a full-scale medical facility at the point of implantation. He also suggested that it be used effectively in industry.
This new plastic material is a molecular-level entanglement of two polymer segments, and the different molecular bends of the two segments at different temperatures ensure a change in shape. Each segment remains stable at a constant ambient temperature, and an increase in temperature causes a change in shape.
