Fresh garlic cultivation techniques
Garlic, a clean and eco-friendly vegetable, is produced through the process of soft cultivation under dark conditions, ensuring no pollution or pesticide residues. This unique method results in bright yellow garlic shoots that are tender, nutritious, and highly appealing to consumers. Garlic yellow has become a popular side dish in many households and maintains a stable presence in the market due to its high demand.
One of the key advantages of garlic yellow is its short growth cycle and wide adaptability to temperature ranges. It can thrive between 10°C and 30°C, making it suitable for cultivation in early spring, early summer, autumn, and early winter, except during the coldest months and the hottest days of summer. The cultivation process is simple, scalable, and can be carried out in cool, well-ventilated areas such as open fields or unused rooms.
The setup involves preparing the planting area by selecting appropriate locations based on temperature and market demand. In regions like Daejeon, planting is typically avoided during midsummer and early autumn. For optimal growth, shaded outdoor areas or air-cooled spaces are preferred in late August to May. During colder seasons, sunny and wind-shielded spots are ideal. Shading structures, such as black plastic sheets or straw curtains, are used to create a dark environment, which is crucial for the development of garlic yellow.
For efficient space utilization, multi-tiered beds are constructed in greenhouses, with each bed frame spaced 70–90 cm apart and elevated 20 cm above ground level. A layer of straw stalks is placed at the bottom, followed by a mix of garden soil and pine-based compost to provide a nutrient-rich base.
When selecting garlic for planting, it's essential to choose large, undamaged bulbs with few cloves. Some commercial varieties may require low-temperature treatment to break dormancy before planting. The garlic bulbs should be peeled slightly to improve moisture absorption and air circulation. Before sowing, they should be soaked in water for 24 hours and, optionally, in a diluted gibberellin solution to accelerate sprouting.
During the growing phase, consistent watering and temperature control are critical. After planting, the soil should be covered with fine sand and kept moist. Shading covers are then placed over the beds to maintain darkness. Watering should be done regularly but not excessively to prevent rotting. If the temperature is too high, humidity should be controlled to avoid disease. Proper irrigation ensures healthy growth and high-quality yields.
Fertilization with an organic-inorganic compound liquid fertilizer (diluted 800 times) can enhance plant vitality, improve drought and cold resistance, and promote faster maturation. Harvesting begins 15–20 days after planting, when the shoots reach 30–40 cm in height. Multiple harvests can be conducted every 15–20 days, with up to 2–3 cuts per cycle. One kilogram of garlic can yield about 2.3 kilograms of garlic yellow.
To ensure quality, harvested garlic yellow must be sorted for uniform size, removing any weak or damaged shoots. It should be transported in baskets with regular watering to prevent spoilage, especially during long-distance transport. Maintaining proper storage conditions is vital to preserve freshness, taste, and appearance.
